作为2012伦敦奥运的协同项目,去年4月4日至9月9日在英国 Tate Modern 举办的 Damien Hirst 回顾展,共吸引得463,087名参观者进场,成为该博物馆史上最受欢迎的个展,连大师如 Edward Hopper (2004年展出,人数429,909名)及 Paul Gauguin (2010-11年展出,人数420,686名)也不是他的对手。即便把联展也算在一起,Damine Hirst 回顾展在 Tate Modern 史上也只是屈居第二──仅次于2002年 Matisse 与 Picasso 联展纪录的 467,166名。

博物馆总监 Chris Dercon 当时说:「我们很高兴看到这麽多人前来观看与讨论 Damien Hirst 在 Tate Modern 的展览。」

如今事隔一年,读过英国《每日电讯报》的报道,不知 Chris Dercon 还是否笑得出?

该报道指,Damien Hirst 的展览不仅引来大量观众,也惹来大量批评。有公众表示,这位自 high (自我满足)的 Damien 的作品「无意义」、「重覆」而且「几乎一律差劣」,并指 Tate Modern 浪费了纳税人的金钱。

在「资讯自由法」 (Freedom of Information Act) 下,Tate 透露,展览一共透过信件、电邮及意见卡途径,共收到192个批评,且看当中部份意见:

 

那是对人类智慧的侮辱,也是一所世界级博物馆的羞耻。

展览狡猾而成功地大卖「无物」。

在 Hirst 的展览外有两个垃圾桶:「一般垃圾」和「可回收垃圾」。烦请澄清当展览结束后,它的作品将会丢到哪一方。

看讨厌的展览有时也是有趣的事。我认为 Daimen Hirst 的作品几乎一律差劣。

沉闷而且视觉上欠缺刺激的装模作样的垃圾。

我是因为感兴趣与好奇而来…一个迷朦的、装模作样的展览。我只想立刻回到外面的阳光裡去。

部份反对意见则把矛头指向艺术家大量使用生或死的动物与昆虫。

对于展品中的生物明显不受尊重,你是如何纵容?还是在钱字行头的概念上,昆虫连作为生物的资格也没有?

我对那件虐待苍蝇的作品感到震惊。看着那些半乾的昆虫躺在地上死去,我不敢疑惑,为甚麽英国这个世界动物保护协会发源地会容许这种事情发生?

除此以外,还有对门票、语音导赏、指示牌、学生团等各种各样的批评。

 

Tate Modern 则反驳指,Damien Hirst 获广泛认可为同代人中最重要的艺术家之一。「接近五十万人进场,反映这个展览在公众及媒体间好评如潮。」「Tate 鼓励公众对其丰富的展览、展品及活动作出讨论与回应。」
